UNRAVELLING THE COMPLEXITIES OF ENDOMETRIOSIS AND ITS COMPLICATIONS

Endometriosis Complications

Recent observations in Kerala have revealed an alarming increase in the incidence of extensive endometriosis cases, which can have a detrimental impact on fertility. Disturbingly, even teenagers are now being affected by this condition, leading to prolonged suffering throughout their lives. The early onset of endometriosis in teenagers raises concerns about the long-term effects on their reproductive health and quality of life. This emerging trend highlights the need for improved awareness, early diagnosis, and comprehensive management of endometriosis in Kerala. Timely intervention, specialized care, and support are crucial in addressing the challenges faced by these young individuals and minimizing the long-term impact on their well-being.

How lifestyle changes can impact Endometriosis?

Lifestyle changes play a crucial role in managing endometriosis as obesity and the intake of foods high in saturated fats are prevalent in Kerala. Obesity is associated with increased estrogen levels, which can worsen endometriosis symptoms. By maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise, hormone imbalances can be modified. In Kerala, adopting a traditional diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods like turmeric and ginger can help manage inflammation and pelvic pain. Regular exercise, such as yoga or walking, promotes overall well-being and alleviates discomfort. These lifestyle modifications can positively impact endometriosis by reducing symptoms and improving hormonal balance.

Cause and complications:

The exact cause of endometriosis remains unknown, although various hypotheses exist. However, it is widely acknowledged as a hormone-dependent condition. Complications associated with endometriosis include severe abdominal and back pain, debilitating menstrual pain that hampers daily activities, and heavy bleeding. Additionally, it can lead to painful intercourse and infertility. The presence of large ovarian chocolate cysts can result in complications such as cyst rupture, torsion (twisting), and internal bleeding, necessitating emergency surgical intervention. Addressing these complications requires a multidisciplinary approach involving gynaecologists, pain specialists, and fertility experts to provide comprehensive care and management for individuals with endometriosis.
